The Hire a Panther program provided Jessica Buthmann听with a remarkable opportunity to work in the Gordon听F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies听with Jacques Barber, Ph.D., dean, and international听postdoctoral researcher Sigal Zilcha-Mano, Ph.D.
Since February 2013, Ms. Buthmann has gained听hands-on psychology experience working on clinical听research projects, taping therapy sessions of patients听with major depressive disorder. Using the Working听Alliance Inventory, Ms. Buthmann developed a new听coding manual that assesses the degree to which听patients feel understood by their therapists. She听also provided technical assistance and database听management. These projects, as well as discussions听with Dr. Zilcha-Mano, have helped Ms. Buthmann听understand the importance of research, and greatly听enhance her critical thinking skills.
Ms. Buthmann believes that her experiences from the Hire a Panther program听have helped prepare her for graduate school and a career as a psychology researcher.
Perhaps even more meaningful than the work Ms.听Buthmann has been able to do are the connections听and relationships she has built. Dr. Barber and听Dr. Zilcha-Mano have been very supportive and听encouraging to her throughout the stressful graduate听school application process. Working with them, as听well as international research assistants, has helped听Ms. Buthmann to see psychological issues from听different points of view. These relationships have been听extremely influential on both her career goals and her听personal development.
Ms. Buthmann believes that her experiences through听the Hire a Panther program have helped to prepare听her for graduate school and a career as a psychology听researcher. Recruiters for graduate school and听research assistant positions outside听the University are interested in and听impressed by the opportunities she听has been afforded at Adelphi. These听opportunities have contributed greatly听to her acceptance into the Einstein听College of Medicine鈥檚 Cognitive听Neurophysiology Laboratory ACE听Summer Internship Program and the behavioral听neuroscience master鈥檚 degree program at Queens听College. She is grateful to the wonderful professors听and Adelphi鈥檚 Center for Career Development for听bringing her closer to her goals, and hopes that听other students will take advantage of its rewarding听programs.
