Hire a Panther provided Jessica Buthmann an opportunity to work in the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies.
The Hire a Panther program provided Jessica ButhmannÌýwith a remarkable opportunity to work in the GordonÌýF. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological StudiesÌýwith Jacques Barber, Ph.D., dean, and internationalÌýpostdoctoral researcher Sigal Zilcha-Mano, Ph.D.
Since February 2013, Ms. Buthmann has gainedÌýhands-on psychology experience working on clinicalÌýresearch projects, taping therapy sessions of patientsÌýwith major depressive disorder. Using the WorkingÌýAlliance Inventory, Ms. Buthmann developed a newÌýcoding manual that assesses the degree to whichÌýpatients feel understood by their therapists. SheÌýalso provided technical assistance and databaseÌýmanagement. These projects, as well as discussionsÌýwith Dr. Zilcha-Mano, have helped Ms. ButhmannÌýunderstand the importance of research, and greatlyÌýenhance her critical thinking skills.

Ms. Buthmann believes that her experiences from the Hire a Panther programÌýhave helped prepare her for graduate school and a career as a psychology researcher.
Perhaps even more meaningful than the work Ms.ÌýButhmann has been able to do are the connectionsÌýand relationships she has built. Dr. Barber andÌýDr. Zilcha-Mano have been very supportive andÌýencouraging to her throughout the stressful graduateÌýschool application process. Working with them, asÌýwell as international research assistants, has helpedÌýMs. Buthmann to see psychological issues fromÌýdifferent points of view. These relationships have beenÌýextremely influential on both her career goals and herÌýpersonal development.
Ms. Buthmann believes that her experiences throughÌýthe Hire a Panther program have helped to prepareÌýher for graduate school and a career as a psychologyÌýresearcher. Recruiters for graduate school andÌýresearch assistant positions outsideÌýthe University are interested in andÌýimpressed by the opportunities sheÌýhas been afforded at Adelphi. TheseÌýopportunities have contributed greatlyÌýto her acceptance into the EinsteinÌýCollege of Medicine’s CognitiveÌýNeurophysiology Laboratory ACEÌýSummer Internship Program and the behavioralÌýneuroscience master’s degree program at QueensÌýCollege. She is grateful to the wonderful professorsÌýand Adelphi’s Center for Career Development forÌýbringing her closer to her goals, and hopes thatÌýother students will take advantage of its rewardingÌýprograms.
