Highlights and accomplishments of the faculty of the Department of Languages, Literature, and Culture.
This year, Dr. Nicolas Carbo taught泭courses in Advanced Conversation泭Through Film, Trends and Tendencies in泭Hispanic America, Intro to Hispanic Lit.,泭Advanced Grammar and Composition,泭and a Survey of Hispanic-American Lit.
Dr. Jonathan Hiller published the article泭The Negation of God Erected into a泭System of Disaster Relief: The British泭Press and the Great Neapolitan Earthquake泭of 1857 in Forum Italicum and a泭book chapter on scientist Cesare Lombrosos泭influence on literature and opera泭in Routledges The Cesare Lombroso Handbook.泭He also presented research on novelist泭Alfredo Oriani at the AATI Annual泭Conference in Strasbourg, France, and泭will present a paper on Franchettis 1892泭opera Cristoforo Colombo at the 2014 MLA泭Annual Convention in Chicago.
Dr. Nicole Rudolph presented a paper泭on technology and nature in the French泭home at the Society for French Historical泭Studies in Cambridge, MA in April and泭took over as Director of the International泭Studies program in September. She has泭signed a contract to publish her book, At泭Home in Postwar France, with Berghahn泭Books (Oxford / New York). She will be泭speaking about the Grenelle de l’environnement泭in Aberdeen, Scotland next July.
Dr. Priya Wadhera has signed a book泭contract with Rodopi to publish 倏娶勳眶勳紳硃梭泭Copies: The Postmodern Aesthetic of Georges泭Perec and Andy Warhol as part of Rodopis泭Faux Titre series. It is scheduled to appear泭in 2014. Her article on food in Perec泭Priv矇s de repas du soir: Meals and泭memories in Georges Perecs W ou le souvenir泭餃e紳款硃紳釵梗 is presently under review by泭French Forum, a journal of the University泭of Pennsylvania.
Last fall, she published the article 竄F礙ter泭la copie, brouiller loriginal: Une 矇tude de泭lesth矇tique postmoderne dans Un cabinet泭餃a鳥硃喧梗喝娶 de Perec et doeuvres choisies de泭Warhol罈 in Modern Language Notes and a泭book review on L矇ternel et l矇ph矇m癡re泭by Christelle Reggiani which appeared in泭Columbia Universitys Romanic Review.
Dr. Raysa Amador, in addition to her myriad duties as chair and tireless champion of the study of languages on campus, completed the manuscript of an intermediate Spanish language textbook entitled Lengua y vida (co-authored with Maria Dominicis) which will be sent to editorial houses for review. She also participated in the 2013 ADFL Summer Seminar in Pittsburgh, PA, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.
Dr. Rakhel Villamil-Acera completed a book chapter entitled Pedro Mu簽oz Seca (1881-1936): The Comic Effect of the Grotesque which will appear in Palgrave Macmillans Spanish and Portuguese Across Time, Space, and Borders. She has published Sociolectos y antilenguajes en el teatro c籀mico de preguerra in the journal Critica Hisp獺nica. Her article 癒Qu矇 divertido es divorciarse!: la desentimentalizaci籀n del divorcio en el teatro madrile簽o antes y despu矇s de la Segunda Rep繳blica is in press in the journal Hispania.. The manuscript for her book project entitled La construcci籀n del di獺logo teatral en el teatro c籀mico espa簽ol (1898-1936): el discurso humor穩stico en el context social has been submitted for review.
Together, the faculty of the DLLC have been working on the following programs throughout the year: The Certificate in Translation Studies, which has been approved and has begun accepting students; the Italian Concentration for International Studies; and finally, revisions to courses for approval within Adelphis new General Education program.
All of this work would not be possible without Ms. Kathy Kannengeiser, our dedicated administrative assistant, our adjunct faculty, and so many outstanding students who make the department a stimulating place to learn, conduct research, and communicate.
