When most people visit a city, they can鈥檛 wait to sample the local cuisine. When Alicia Collumbell visits a city, she can鈥檛 wait to check out the museums.

鈥淧eople of my generation seem to think museums are outdated,鈥� she said. 鈥淏ut that鈥檚 because they usually don鈥檛 know enough about museums.鈥�

Ms. Collumbell knows museums. While attending , she spent summers backpacking through Europe, visiting the in Paris and the in London, among others. She has also visited numerous halls of history in New York.

Adelphi proved to be a nurturing environment for Ms. Collumbell, who graduated in May as a double major in history and anthropology. Interestingly, the Central Islip, New York, native was set to attend , but then her father became ill and she needed to stay in the Long Island area.

鈥淚 came to Adelphi as a biology major, but then I realized it didn鈥檛 suit my interests,鈥� she said. 鈥淪omeone told me I should take an anthropology course because I鈥檝e always been interested in cultures.鈥�

, an adjunct professor of physical anthropology and museum studies, took Ms. Collumbell under her wing. Ms. Collumbell worked as a collections intern at the in Astoria, New York, where Ms. Konstantatos is the curator.

鈥淚t was a pleasure to work with her because she was passionate and committed,鈥� Ms. Konstantatos said. 鈥淪he was also able to draw from the breadth of her studies to ask questions and help problem solve.鈥�

That internship gave Ms. Collumbell the experience she needed to land her current position as a paid intern at the in Sayville, New York. In 2014, she plans to begin a dual degree program to earn a law degree and a master鈥檚 in museum studies. She鈥檚 considering Georgetown University, Duke University and Vanderbilt University.

鈥淚 would like to be a curator, or work in the legal department of a museum,鈥� said Ms. Collumbell, who also hopes to live abroad.

鈥淪he will most definitely achieve her dreams, both in academia and her career,鈥� said Anagnostis Agelarakis, Ph.D., professor and chair of the department of anthropology and sociology. 鈥淚 can also foresee her as an Adelphi ambassador鈥攁 good and productive global citizen, able to adapt with relative ease to the rapidly evolving challenges facing the 21st century, domestically and overseas.鈥�

Ms. Collumbell is smart, energetic and enthusiastic, as evidenced by her many activities at Adelphi: honors student; vice president of ; editorial board member of the ; admissions tour guide; orientation leader for freshmen; and member of 鈥攖he world鈥檚 largest nonprofit collegiate organization鈥攚hich led to volunteer work with and .

However, few things captivate her as much as a visit to a museum. Her favorite? in Manhattan.

鈥淚t鈥檚 sort of out of the way and different,鈥� she said. 鈥淚鈥檝e been to a lot of different museums, but I like the smaller, out-of-the-way ones the best.鈥�
