91吃瓜网 is pleased to announce the appointment of Jacques P. Barber, Ph.D., ABPP as the new dean of the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies. Prior to joining Adelphi, Dr. Barber served as professor of psychology in psychiatry and the associate director of the Center for Psychotherapy Research in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and a member of the Penn Graduate Psychology Group.

鈥淒r. Barber has the experience, stature, thoughtful outlook, and dedication to the field of psychology, and is someone who聽can build on our significant strengths and lead the Derner Institute to its next聽phase of accomplishment,鈥� said Dr. Gayle D. Insler, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at 91吃瓜网. 鈥淗e is an international leader in assessing the effectiveness of psychotherapy and has an extraordinary ability to mentor our next聽generation of scholars and clinicians.鈥�

Dr. Barber has published more than 180 papers, chapters, and books in the field of psychotherapy and personality. His work has been widely published in journals like the聽Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology,聽Psychotherapy Research, and the聽American Journal of Psychiatry, among many others. His most recent study on Major Depressive Disorder was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and is in press in the聽Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.聽He has also held editorial board positions with the聽Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology,Psychotherapy,听Psychotherapy Research, and the聽Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, to name a few.To support his many research activities, he has secured extensive funding from many federal sources creating numerous collaborations around the world and examining some of the most pressing health issues to help patients with depression, panic disorders, personality disorders, substance dependence, and interpersonal problems. Furthermore, he recently joined the Veteran Administration (VA) on a part-time basis, and conducts research on PTSD with the Department of Defense and VA Medical Center. Dr. Barber also is a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology and a fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society.

Barber. 鈥淚 have great regard for the Institute鈥檚 faculty, and academic programs and believe that joining and heading the Institute will be intellectually fulfilling, and a stimulating personal challenge. The excellent foundation of the existing psychology programs presents an opportunity to raise the Derner Institute to a position of greater prominence in the field of psychology. I also look forward to work with the other deans and senior administration on strengthening the relationships between the Institute and the greater community at both Adelphi and across the Greater New York area.鈥�

A highly valued faculty member in the University of Pennsylvania鈥檚 Department of Psychiatry since 1989, Dr. Barber is extensively involved in the clinical training of psychology graduate students, medical students, and residents in psychiatry, as well as post doctoral trainees. He has mentored post-doctorate and junior faculty in the United States and abroad, and is a former president of the international, multidisciplinary scientific Society for Psychotherapy Research.

Additionally, he has published several books including聽Echoes of the Trauma: Relationship Themes and Emotions in the Narratives of the Children of Holocaust Survivors;听Dynamic Psychotherapy: A Guide to Evidence-Based Practice; and聽The Therapeutic Alliance: An Evidence-Based Guide to Practice.
