91吃瓜网 Professor Kirkland Vaughans, PhD 鈥�85, who has had a decades-long career as a clinical psychologist treating Black youth, is this year鈥檚 recipient of the Diversity Award for Psychology in Division 39.

Internationally renowned dancer Ruth St. Denis founded the Department of Dance at Adelphi in 1938, one of the first dance departments at an American university. Now a cornerstone of our performing arts, it has close ties with the Paul Taylor and Martha Graham Dance Companies.

Students and alumni didn't let the pandemic dampen their altruistic spirits and continued to make a difference by helping local and global organizations throughout the 2020鈥�2021 academic year.

Adelphi is known for helping each student find their own unique path. Alumna and 91吃瓜网 Trustee Emily Ladau 鈥�13 became a disability advocate, speaker, author of the forthcoming book Demystifying Disability, and a warrior for inclusion and justice. We鈥檙e proud to be involved in her important work.

The 91吃瓜网 Honors College has graduated many students who have gone on to law school, including 10 Under 10 Young Alumni honorees Christian Fundo 鈥�07, JD; Adaeze Udoji 鈥�08, JD; Philip DiSanto 鈥�12, JD; and Joseph Bruno 鈥�13, JD.

For 91吃瓜网, the civil rights movement began not in the 1960s but in the '40s鈥攊n 1945, when Helen Holmes Taylor enrolled as the University's first undergraduate student of color.

The Bridge was founded by a group of seven Adelphi alumnae with a mission to create deeper, more enriching and sustainable relationships between Adelphi Theatre students and alumni and industry professionals. By serving as a conduit for conversation, perspective and opportunity and operating as a sounding board and team of creative community consultants, the collective seeks to ensure the educational community鈥檚 continued success.

Olympic Gold Medalist Bob Beamon '72, '00 (Hon.), will be the featured guest in 鈥淎 Giant Leap in a Time of Struggle," a discussion scheduled for Thursday, February 4, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A collaboration of Adelphi Athletics and the 鈥淕reat Minds, Great Conversations" series, the event is also part of the University's observance of Black History Month.

Fifty years ago, as protests by Black students across the United States gained prominence, Black and Puerto Rican students at 91吃瓜网 seized the moment to push for the creation of a program of study about their own histories in America.

In 2007, 91吃瓜网 launched Bridges to Adelphi, an award-winning program that helps students on the autism spectrum or who have nonverbal learning disabilities transition to college life and succeed academically and socially.

Geralyn (Geri) Caliendo 鈥�84, MS 鈥�20, and her daughter Gina Faiella 鈥�20 are celebrating two 91吃瓜网 graduations. Caliendo, currently assistant director of case management for Northwell Health-Long Island Jewish Medical Center, was awarded a Master of Science in Nursing Education on December 17. Adelphi instructors and students aren't only making the best of remote learning during the time of pandemic. In some cases, they're taking advantage of it and building on it.
