{"id":2149,"date":"2023-08-18T11:35:10","date_gmt":"2023-08-18T15:35:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/?page_id=2149"},"modified":"2025-05-02T11:09:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T15:09:11","slug":"inviting-scholars","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/inviting-scholars\/","title":{"rendered":"Inviting Scholars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This designation enables us to welcome talented international scholars who enrich our vibrant academic community through research, teaching, and professional observation across our eight distinguished Colleges and Schools.<\/p>\n<p>Adelphi is authorized to sponsor eligible individuals in the following Exchange Visitor categories:<\/p>\n<h2>Inviting a J-1 Scholar<\/h2>\n<p>Academic departments, colleges, and schools play a vital role in identifying, inviting, and supporting J-1 exchange visitors. To ensure a smooth process and full compliance with federal regulations, departments must screen prospective scholars based on the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Academic Credentials:<\/strong> The applicant must possess the appropriate academic background (minimum of a bachelor\u2019s degree) and experience relevant to the proposed academic or research program.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Appropriate Activities:<\/strong> The scholar\u2019s planned activities must fall within the regulatory scope of the intended J-1 exchange visitor category (e.g., research or teaching).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Qualified Position:<\/strong> The position must be non-tenure-track and appropriate for temporary, educational exchange purposes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>English Language Proficiency:<\/strong> Scholars must demonstrate sufficient English proficiency through an objective and documented evaluation to function successfully in the U.S. academic environment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In-Person Engagement:<\/strong> J-1 programs must be conducted primarily in person, with no more than 40% of activities delivered remotely (hybrid or virtual).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formal Invitation Process:<\/strong> Departments must submit all required documentation to the Office of International Services in accordance with the scholar\u2019s intended category.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Orientation and Cultural Support:<\/strong> Host departments must ensure scholars have access to orientation, cultural programming, and institutional resources to support a successful exchange experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Required Documents<\/h2>\n<p><strong>To be submitted by the inviting academic unit:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Invitation Letter<\/strong> from the Academic Dean<\/li>\n<li><strong>Updated CV<\/strong> (must show a minimum of a bachelor\u2019s degree and relevant experience)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Research Proposal<\/strong> detailing the scholar\u2019s planned research or teaching activities<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2020\/07\/J-1-Exchange-Visitor-Program-English-Proficiency-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">English Proficiency Report<\/a> documenting objectively measured English language skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To be submitted by the prospective J-1 scholar:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2020\/07\/Form-DS-2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DS-2019 Request Form<\/a> (completed by the scholar)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Copy of Valid Passport<\/strong> (biographical page with machine-readable zone)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2023\/11\/Exchange-Visitor-J-Insurance-Waiver.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Insurance Guarantee<\/a> (must submit proof of insurance upon arrival)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proof of Funding<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2022\/12\/Affidavit-of-Support-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Affidavit of Support<\/a> for all financial sponsors<\/li>\n<li>Supporting financial documentation from all funding sources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This designation enables us to welcome talented international scholars who enrich our vibrant academic community through research, teaching, and professional observation across our eight distinguished Colleges and Schools.
