For assistance, contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/agency\/contact\/phone.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Security Administration<\/a> by phone at 1.800.772.1213.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/identification-taxes\/tin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)<\/a> is an identification number available for international students and scholars who cannot get a Social Security Number (SSN) and is used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the administration of tax-related documents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><span>Required Documents<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You must have the following original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency. Photocopies or notarized copies of documents will not be accepted by the Social Security Administration. Applicants in initial status must wait 2 weeks following the SEVIS registration from their DSO.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span>Application for a Social Security card (SS-5)<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span>Valid Original I-20 or DS-2019<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span>I-94 Arrival Document &#8211; Most Recent<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span>Unexpired Foreign Passport<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span>Proof of Employment Authorization through one of the following:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span>F-1 Student \u2013 On-campus employment hiring letter and DSO work authorization letter dated within 30 days<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">F-1 Student \u2013 CPT endorsed I-20 and Official Employer Letter<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span>F-1 Student \u2013 Unexpired Employment Authorization (EAD) Card<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span>J-1 Exchange Visitor \u2013 Letter from Responsible Officer dated within 30 days<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><span>Steps to Apply for Your SSN<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Eligible candidates must complete the following steps to obtain your SSN.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Start the application process online &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/ssnumber\/\">Social Security Number and Card<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Print and save the online control number shown once you complete the online application.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Bring the online control number and all required documents within 30 days of your local office.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Locate your local office in the country where you physically live, <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.ssa.gov\/ICON\/main.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Security Locator<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Check-in at the kiosk when you arrive.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Submit application and required documents.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">You should receive your SSN card within two weeks after submitting a complete application with the SSA Office.
